Fort Amherst tunnels

The Tunnel complex was based on caves pre dating the Fort.they were expanded and strengthened when the Fort was constructed. They provided storage and Magazine space and shelter for the Garrison during a Siege.

The two Gun Floors provided protection to Cannons that could fire the full length of the Barrier Ditch that went all the way down to the River Medway.

Also the Tunnels provided a means of access between the Lower and Upper works of the Fort.
